Indianapolis is a nice stop-over town. I'd suggest three places to visit while there. The Children's Museum of Indianapolis is a great place to visit (Websites: http://www.childrensmuseum.org/ and
http://visitindy.com/indianapolis-attractions-top-picks-the-childrens-museum-of-indianapolis ) with five floors of nice exhibits for young kids or grandkids. I'd also recommend visiting the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Museum. It's got some really neat exhibits about auto racing (Websites: http://visitindy.com/indianapolis-attractions-top-picks-indianapolis-motor-speedway-hall-of-fame-museum and
http://www.indianapolismotorspeedway.com/ and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Indianapolis_Motor_Speedway ). Both kids and adults would like it. Lastly, you'll want to go to the Soldiers and Sailors Monument in downtown Indy. Websites:

There is a museum in the base and you can either walk or ride an elevator to the top. It's decorated for the Christmas holiday. As for places to eat, there are many. Scotty's Brewhouse has a number of locations in the state (Website:

Other places include the Broad Ripple Brewpub ( http://www.broadripplebrewpub.com/ ), the Alcatraz Brewing Company on the circle near the monument ( http://indianapolis.citysearch.com/profile/3950260/indianapolis_in/alcatraz_brewing_company.html ) and the chain Rock Bottom Brewery
( http://rockbottom.com/Indianapolis-Downtown). If you like Blues, you should visit Indiana's oldest Bar, the Slippery Noodle Inn, south of the Monument on Meridian Street (Website: http://www.slipperynoodle.com/index.php ). All in all, Indy is a nice place to visit, with a huge sports backing of Pacers, Colts, Hoosiers, Boilermakers, and Bulldogs. Enjoy a two-day or three-day visit. If you have time head south from Indy on Highway 37 for 45 minutes and visit the college town of Bloomington and Indiana University -- my alma mater (Websites: http://www.visitbloomington.com/and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bloomington,_Indiana ). Visit Nick's while you're there ( http://www.nicksenglishhut.com/ ). Whatever you decide, a trip to the heartland is worth it.
